katie and me agp 10.12.12.

With Winter passing and Spring around the corner it’s a perfect time to plan a photoshoot. Soon the blooms of the flowers and trees will begin to decorate our landscape. That means it’s a perfect time to book an appointment with your favorite photographer. I am a professional makeup artist in the Washington, D.C. area and Angela Goodhart and I have worked together for 10 years. She and I love to help our clients achieve the perfect headshots and portraits.  Here are some of the tips we share with our clients before their shoot, for both indoor and outdoor shoots.

Michelle Discher on a blanket

When a client books a session with me before their photoshoot it is wonderful for so many reasons. My favorite reason is simply for them to be pampered! Sometimes we are moving so fast that we forget to slow down and take care of ourselves. So many clients tell me that they are so happy they treated themselves to having me style their hair and do their makeup because it was a great way to relax before their shoot. They feel like their pictures look great not only because they had professional hair and makeup, but also because when they finally got in front of the camera all the issues of the day were farther away in their rear-view mirror. They tell me that they were really able to relax and enjoy themselves!

It’s a great idea to take care of some small details too. Believe it or not, there is a chance that your fingernails will show up in the picture. Sometimes a simple pose will incorporate your hand being in the shot. I recommend having a professional manicure done before the shoot. Celebrity photoshoots at the top magazines always have a manicurist on set! If you can’t get a professional manicure then consider taking a few minutes to give yourself a simple manicure, both women and men, and remember to check the nails on your teen boys and girls too. Just take a moment to cut and smooth out rough nails. For women, I recommend a light or clear polish. Dark nails and nail designs are fun but can be distracting in the final picture. And the “perfect nails” today may seem trendy our outdated as you look back at the pictures one day. Keeping it simple is the best bet!

The same guidelines are great for hair and makeup too. I love making women of all ages feel beautiful. But my goal is always that they feel like a more beautiful version of themselves. The makeup I do on my clients is what I call “simple beauty.” I don’t set out to change their look, I want to simply enhance their God-given beauty. I don’t recommend any trendy hair or makeup for a photoshoot. If it’s homecoming or prom that is a different story! But for a headshot or senior portrait session I like simple hair and makeup. I always make sure my client or Angela has lip color, powder and or oil blot sheets, and a hair brush on location so that my clients can touch up at the shoot.

The most important tips for hair are: 1 – Get a fresh trim on your hair, especially if it is long. It will curl much better if the ends of your hair are fresh and it will look so healthy! I promise that cutting off an inch will make you look better – not worse! 2 – Have clean roots and dry hair when you arrive to my studio. And 3 – If you have super curly hair consider getting a blow out before you come to see me. I can style hair for your shoot but if it is super curly, and you want a straight look, it’s best if you arrive with a fresh blow out.

No matter if you hire me to do your makeup and style your hair for your photo shoot, or for prom or any special occasion in your life, you will be treated like a celebrity! I have a studio in Sterling, Virginia where I love to pamper my clients. I travel the country to take classes from the best celebrity makeup artists in the country. I keep up to date on the latest tips and trends and my makeup kit is stocked with the best professional products the industry offers.

I also care about your skin. I want skin to look radiant and natural. I use foundation that is very popular amongst the industry’s best artists. The products I use are also used in TV and film because they leave everyone’s skin looking healthy and natural! I encourage everyone to take great care of their skin, hydrating it and exfoliating it before they see me if at all possible. I can walk you through a plan a few weeks before your shoot to help your skin look amazing by the time you meet with me. Drinking lots of water and using a lip conditioner weeks before the shoot help a lot. The better your skin is the better your makeup will look! I offer lot’s of amazing products to help you accomplish all of this on my website www.MeredithEhler.com.

I believe in natural skincare. I want the products that are used on my clients to be chemical free. Much of the skincare available on my site from Limelight by Alcone is chemical free, mostly organic, and even carbon footprint free. Much of the makeup in my kit is paraben free and cruelty free as well. I am always available to help, even if you have not scheduled a shoot, to help you. Message me anytime to talk about a simple beauty routine or a makeup lesson.

How to Prep for Your Photo Shoot | Meredith Ehler | Makeup Artist/Wardrobe Stylist | Northern Virginia

IMG_1811

So you have found a photographer that you click with!  Great! Now it’s time to prep for your shoot.  The better prepared you are for the shoot the more confident you can be that your pictures will be amazing, and will reflect the most beautiful you possible.

Whether your photo shoot is for your headshot, profile picture, senior portraits, family portrait, or any other reason you have decided to treat yourself to a professional photo shoot, these tips will help you prepare.

Clean Hair

Make sure your hair is clean and dry, and ready for your on-site hair stylist to style.  If you are doing your own hair, make sure your roots appear clean and dry.  It’s a great idea to use styling products that help add volume and body, and keep hair from flying away.  But if you don’t use styling products on a regular basis I suggest you do a trial run the week before.

Mani/Pedi

Here is your excuse to do a little pampering!  You never know when your hands and face will show in a picture.  Having a simple, subtle mani/pedi done before your shoot ensures that nothing will detract from your beautiful face!  I recommend light colors or a french manicure.

Wardrobe Planning

Taking time to plan out your wardrobe before your shoot helps your shoot go smoothly.  Stay away from crazy patterns or items that are too trendy.  Make sure you choose the right jewelry and undergarments for each outfit.  Choose the shoes that are appropriate for the outfit and the setting if you are going to have a natural light shoot.  I recommend trying on your outfit, accessories and all, and make sure you like the look.  Ask your photographer or stylist any questions you may have.  When in doubt, bring an extra outfit so you have the flexibility to change your mind when you are on location.

Touch-up Kit

I recommend that all of my clients bring a touch-up kit with them to the shoot.  It’s so beneficial to have some basics with you so that you can be your own stylist during the shoot.  If your hair gets messy because you are changing outfits, or the wind is blowing, you will need a hair brush.  If you know you tend to get shiny it’s great to have oil-blot sheets or a compact of powder on hand.  And almost all of us have experienced lip gloss disappearing on us.  Having lip color on hand to re-apply during the shoot will keep your makeup balanced and you looking fresh.

*     *     *     *     *

My goal is for you to have an amazing time with your photographer!  I feel that the preparation you do before your shoot will help you feel relaxed and comfortable during the shoot.  And, having a few items with you on location will ensure your last pictures look as good as the first!  The only problem I expect you will have is choosing which pictures are your favorite!

Prom Makeup | Meredith Ehler | Makeup Artist | Washington, D.C.

Prom will be here before you know it. Prom is the time get out of your makeup-comfort-zone.  Gorgeous dresses, sparkly jewels, and a cute date call for memorable makeup. Try a new look for your special night. But do a dress rehearsal before the big night so you know you will like the final look.

I recommend going on Pintrest, YouTube, as well as looking at your favorite websites and looking in magazines for inspiration.  I have amazing looks on my Pintrest makeup board as well as hair inspiration and a prom fashion board. Follow me on Pintrest.

I want you to try a super sparkly eye…use a primer on your eye so the glittery shadow will stick.  Try a pigment shadow from MAC or a mineral shadow from eyeslipsface.com. Pat it on with a flat brush.  Or use the same sparkly shadow on top of your lipgloss.  MAKE UP STORE has an amazing line of glitter that you can use on your face.  I use it with ELF‘s Studio Makeup Lock & Seal.

The bottom line is have fun and try something!

Prom Prep | Meredith Ehler | Fashion Stylist | Northern Virginia

It’s PROM TIME!  I am so happy for all of the lucky girls who get to look forward to prom! When I was in high school I loved prom – any excuse to get dressed up and buy a new dress!

Three beautiful girls I had the pleasure of doing hair and makeup for – Sammy, Arie and Kelsey from Potomac Falls High School!

As you are preparing for prom I have a few tips for you.

Dress:  The item upon which all other prom elements revolve!  Once you have your dress you can accessories with shoes, jewelry and the right bag.  Then I suggest taking some time to do trials with your friends for hair and makeup.  Take pictures of each other in your prom dresses with your hair and makeup done.  This way you can see how the dress works with the colors of makeup you have chosen and whether you like your hair up or down depending on the lines of the dress.

Hair:  Depending on how simple or blingy your dress is, you should choose a hair style that flatters the overall look for the evening.  Long and straight with a simple rhinestone barrette, simple curls, or an up-do with tons of interest each add a different feel to your look.  I recommend balancing the hairstyle with the entire ensemble.  Having a crazy hairstyle with a very detailed dress may be a bit much.  Sometimes it’s nice to have one element being sleek while another takes center stage!

Makeup:  Prom is the perfect time to shine!  Don’t be afraid to sparkle whether it’s eye shadow or shimmer on the top of your cheek bones or shoulders.  This is the night to have fun with makeup you would not normally be daring enough to wear.  I recommend trying fake eyelashes too!  ELF.com sells them for just a few dollars.  Practice before the big night because using the eyelash glue can be tricky.  I will post a blog with tips on applying lashes soon!

Friends: Finally – have a safe and fun night.  Start off the night with your girlfriends, and maybe a makeup artist and hair stylist like me!  Take lots of fun pictures and enjoy your night!  I would love to post some of your pix on my blog so message me!  -Meredith

How to Prepare for Your High School Senior Portrait Session | Meredith Ehler | Image Consultant | Loudoun County, Virginia

Congratulations – you are about to have a portrait session with a professional photographer!  Get excited because you are in for a great time!  There is a bit of homework to do beforehand however.  But don’t worry,  it’s fun homework.  You have to become your own personal stylist to ensure that you look amazing in your pictures!

Whether your session is in a studio or outside, you need to prepare yourself and the outfits you will be wearing for the shoot.  As a stylist I want to make sure your personality shines through but doesn’t overwhelm “you” in your pictures.  Choose your hair style, makeup and wardrobe carefully so that your style is your perfect accessory!

Choosing Your Outfits

Most likely you will be photographed in a “drape” for your yearbook picture as well as in a few of your own outfits.   The typical outfits to prepare are a few casual outfits, an outfit that reflects your hobby like a sport or an instrument you play, and a formal outfit like a prom dress.  Your job is to go through your wardrobe, plan out the outfits and accessorize each of them, from jewelry to the shoes and even undergarments they may require.  Solid colors are best because patterns and busy designs can be overwhelming and don’t always photograph well.  You can always bring an outfit you aren’t sure about with you and the photographer will let you know if it will work.  Shoes don’t always show in the shot but assume they will and bring them along just in case.

lay out your outfits

Attention to Details

During your session you will be posing in different positions.  Some poses will show your fingernails and maybe even toenails.  Make sure to have a fresh manicure and pedicure for your shoot.  Even if you do your nails yourself.  Choosing a simple color, even a clear coat or a french manicure will look great in the pictures.  If you choose a deep color or a mutli-colored manicure it may be distracting.  And remember, we want YOU to stand out, not your nails.

Think about the jewelry and watch you wear in the shoot.  I recommend choosing different accessories that fit the “feel” of each outfit.  For example:  remove your sport watch or friendship bracelets for outfits that are dressy like a prom dress or senior drape.  I suggest laying your outfits out on your bed, with clothing, shoes and accessories too.  This way you can see everything for the entire shoot right in front of you.  If anything stands out too much, consider swapping out that item for one with a more subtle look.  The most important thing in your pictures is you!  Your personal style should not overwhelm you in your pictures.

Beauty Prep

Little things can show up in a big way in your photos.  I recommend having your hair and makeup done by me or a professional like me before your shoot.  I finish the session by making  sure my clients have the essentials with them to do touch ups during the shoot as well.  I recommend bringing a lip gloss with some color in it to re-apply as yours wears off, a compact of powder or oil-blot sheets in case you get shiny, and a hair brush to keep your hair from getting messy as you change your outfits.

A week before consider having your eyebrows shaped and make sure your roots don’t need a touch up.

Makeup for High School Seniors | Meredith Ehler | Makeup Artist | Sterling, Virginia

This past week I had the pleasure to do makeup for 2 beautiful rising high school seniors, Marisa and Maddy.   Basically I am their personal stylist – just like stars have before they walk the red carpet

makeup and hair for Maddy.

I have the privilege of working with a few local Fairfax and Loudoun County photographers and their clients.  The clients typically come to me before they have their photo session for makeup, hair styling, and styling of their outfits they will be wearing for the session.  It’s traditional for high school students, both girls and guys, to have a professional photographer do a portrait session just before their senior year.

makeup for Marisa.

Today, the session with Marisa started with styling her wardrobe.  We chose the outfits that will work best in front of a camera.  We chose the accessories that will best highlight each outfit.  Today’s shoot was with Angela Goodhart of Goodhart Photography.  She has amazing backdrops that work with a myriad of colors and styles of clothing, and personalities!

adding accessories to the adorable dresses.

Then we moved onto makeup.  My goal is to have my client go to her photography session feeling beautiful and confident.  I like to prepare each girl for what to expect during the shoot.  The more they know then the quicker they can become comfortable in front of the camera and the more fun they will have!

makeup!

Any occasion for a professional is a perfect occasion for me to style you!  I recently did hair and makeup for a beautiful client who was doing a special photo book for her husband-to-be as a wedding gift.   I am also available to stay with your during the shoot and style each shot to make sure your hair, makeup, and wardrobes look amazing!   Schedule me right after you schedule your shoot with your photographer to ensure I am available for your shoot date.

Why Hire a Makeup Artist? |Meredith Ehler | Makeup Artist | Sterling, Virginia

What a picture!  What a beauty! Maggie and her mom came over last week and I did her makeup for her senior portrait session with Angela Goodhart of Goodhart Photography. She brought a few different outfits, including a “drape” which is her official senior picture for the yearbook. Maggie is a natural beauty which makes my job easy!  In about 30 minutes or so, I applied makeup to Maggie attaining her desired look of having natural colors on her eyes, just enough to enhance her beauty but not too much to look unnatural.  Her hair is curly naturally so it beautifully framed her face.  I always put a finishing touch on my clients’ hair to make their look complete.  She headed to Angela’s, just around the corner, and they had a fantastic shoot!  They even finished up the day outside with the beautiful backdrop of wildflowers and a waterfall.  Amazing!

My goal as a makeup artist is to bring out the best in you.  I want to help you feel beautiful.Whether it’s a wedding, professional head shot, family holiday card or a girls night out, having professional makeup done as a treat to yourself puts the finishing touches on a special day. Thanks to Maggie and her mom!  I had so much fun with them!  -Meredith

Tres Chic – High School Senior Portraits | Fashion Stylist | Meredith Ehler | Loudoun County, VA

Styling senior portraits is one of my favorite parts of my job!  And in this instance, the high school senior is also a model.  I had a blast styling Taylor’s hair, makeup and clothing.  I decided to style her in some of my vintage Chanel because she LOVES fashion and having modeled in NYC, I knew she would make everything look amazing! She looked great in everything from a full length gown to a Chanel mini-skirt.

Before a photo shoot, it is a great idea to spend some time planning out what you will wear.  Ask the photographer how many clothing changes are planned for the shoot.  Go through your wardrobe and choose outfits that you are comfortable in and reflect who you are.  Don’t forget to accessories them as well.  Choose shoes, jewelry, headbands or hair accessories, and the right undergarments for each outfit.   Even planning your hair and makeup before the shoot really makes a difference.  The final photos will looked more professional and pulled together.  - Meredith
