Tailored Living + Meredith Ehler = Your Dream Closet! | Meredith Ehler | Closet Organizer | Sterling, Virginia

tailored living closet wall

Every woman dreams about the perfect closet!  One where you feel like you are shopping in your favorite boutique yet everything is free and in your size!  As a closet-organizer, I know the impact that a well designed and well organized closet has on a client’s life.  Each day just starts out better, as you are able to choose and accessorize the perfect outfit in a well-lit and glamorous space.  When I organize closets for my clients we can make huge improvements by just editing and re-organizing the contents.  But sometimes a closet needs more TLC thank I can give it.  Sometimes a closet needs to be re-modeled.

I recently met a wonderful woman, Martha Dahlman, and a local business event.  When she told me where she worked I said that I had to come and visit her at work. She took me on a tour of the Tailored Living showroom. As a closet organizer I was like a kid in a candy store!  As a woman I was like a kid in a candy store!  I didn’t want to leave.  I would have been happy just curling up near the granite-covered closet island with the build in ironing board and staying there for hours.

The first thing that caught my eye was the array of finishes and moldings available to customize your dream closet.  The second thing that caught my eye were the lighted clothing racks.  I am dying for them! Have you ever been in your own closet trying searching for a particular black sweater in a sea of black sweaters?  No more struggling to find anything when you have racks with lighting in them.  When you turn them on, they softly light the tops of all of your clothing hung on the hangers.  Then the lights automatically turn off for you.  Dreamy!

Tailored Living offers a myriad of designs, finishes and services for almost every room in your house.  I even got an eye-full of the possible makeovers for my garage and kitchen.  I was inspired for sure!  I recently had a home-decor client of mine ask if I knew of anyone that designs custom Hide-a-beds, or Murphy bed.  Well, I do now. Yes, Tailored Living can do that too.

Clearly I was in heaven.  But don’t take my word for it.  Learn more at Tailored Living on Facebook, Tailored Living on-line, or stop in for a visit.  If you are in the DC area they are conveniently located near the Reston Town Center. Tell them Meredith sent you!  And if you decide to upgrade your closet you may just get my organizing services thrown in for free!  Ask Martha for details.

See you in your new closet!

Chic Baby-bump Makeover – How to be Pregnant and Chic | Meredith Ehler | Stylist| Makeup Artist | Sterling VA

IMG_7115

Meet Caity!  Pregnancy really agrees with her!  She is due next month with baby number 2!  Today she decided to treat herself to a pregnancy makeover with me. This is her “After” picture. My goal was that she would learn a few tips to make her beauty routine streamlined while she is pregnant. I wanted her to feel rejuvenated, refreshed and beautiful when she left!

IMG_7107

Here is Caity’s “Before” picture you can see how pretty she is with no makeup at all. She showed up in comfy clothes, with the plan that we would demo an easy way to dress up her every-day look.  I wanted to give Caity a fresh-faced look that made her feel pretty but not too made up.

I have a degree in fashion and was a fashion stylist for years. There are simple ways to put together outfits that are both comfortable and cute! You can see that Caity’s outfit is super comfy and stylish.

I used natural, earthy colors on her eyes, emphasizing liner on the top lid so that she looks more awake and vibrant. Having a slight curl in her hair makes her look just a bit more dressy, but it didn’t take much time at all. I finished her hair with a light coat of hairspray. The humidity in can be pretty intense this time of year.

Here in Sterling, outside Washington, DC, life moves quickly. It is hard to set aside time for yourself. Caity brought a few outfit ideas that would work for a night out with girlfriends, or a date night with her hubby. We chose this one because it is something she would wear even if she weren’t pregnant.

I am so proud of her for setting time aside for herself! Consider giving yourself or someone you know a pregnancy makeover as a gift!

Protect Your Fabric With Scotch Guard | Meredith Ehler | Home Decorator | Northern Virginia

Now that the weather is nice it’s time for an outdoor project.  Time to Scotch Guard your stuff!  Protecting your fabric covered items, especially upholstered or treasured stuff, has never been easier.

311

I am a believer in Scotch Guard.  I use it to protect canvas and upholstered items in my home and wardrobe. Stains stay on top of the surface instead of sinking into the fabric. Water and liquids just bead up and roll off.  It is not to be used on every surface so it is very important you test it out on your item in an inconspicuous place first.  If it changes the look of your item at all do not use it further.

I use it on upholstered items like small stools I had recovered.  My new coach shoes looked like they could be ruined with one misplaced footstep from my son, so I Scotch Guarded them too.  My 3 year barstools still look like new, and we use them daily.

After doing a test to see if your fabric can handle the product, simply spray a light coat, in a well ventilated area, and let dry.  Use a motion similar to if you are spray painting an item, hold the bottle about a foot or so away and make sweeping motions from left to right over the product.  I often do a second coat on items.  Items will need to be re-sprayed after continued use, maybe after 6 months or a year, or if you had to spot clean the item with water.  Cleaning with a wet rag helps remove any stains but it can also remove the protection.  Just let the item dry and re-apply.  Stains can be blotted off and spilled drinks just bead up and roll off.  Remember, it will not work on every surface, so do a test spot on your fabric items.

Beauty Tips To Help You Look Hot In The Cold | Meredith Ehler | Makeup Artist | Sterling, VA

In this crazy, sub-zero weather looking good drops to the bottom of my to-do list.  I find myself twisted up in scarves, hats, and gloves, not to mention layers of sweaters and jackets leaving me an over-heated, static-haired mess!  Bundling up is wreaking havoc on my hair, leaving me with either permanent hat-head or hair that is half standing up and the other clinging uncomfortably to my cheeks.  And it’s so cold I find myself wearing my gloves in the grocery store, completely negating the need for a manicure.

Don’t get the winter blues!  Here are a few tips to keep you looking hot in the cold!

Hair:  My hair sure seems to have a mind of it’s own, and wings because it keeps trying to fly away!  Keep hand lotion in your purse to use as a quick-fix conditioner.  I rub a small amount between my hands and comb it through to conquer the fly-aways.

Also consider a leave-in conditioner during the winter months.  If your hair tends to be dry it can be the cause of the fly-away’s.  A little extra moisture should do the trick.

Sephora has this one from Ouidad which is a great line for curly hair.

Ouidad - Moisture Lock™ Leave-In Conditioner

Lips:  Chapped lips can be a real mess.  Once they are chapped it seems as if it takes forever to return them to their smooth state.  To prevent chapped lips drink plenty of water and make sure to condition them to prevent chapping.  I carry around lip balm as well as wear a moisturizing lipstick.  Preventing chapping is much easier than repairing.  But if your lips are chapped you can use this exfoliant from e.l.f.

e.l.f. Lip Exfoliator

The e.l.f. Studio Lip Exfoliator will help you shed the layers of flaking skin.  You can find it online as well as at Target and Walmart.  And at $3, it’s a great buy!  Then make sure you keep them moisturized with your favorite lip balm.  I recommend at night you applying a heavy product like Aquaphor Lip Repair to get a dose of deep hydration and repair your lips while you sleep.

Cheeks:  If you will be out in the elements for a prolonged period of time consider a layer of Aquaphor on your cheeks as well as your lips.  As long as you don’t mind glowing a bit, Aquaphor serves as a barrier during the cold and wind, preventing wind-burnt cheeks. This is a great tip for children who will be making snowmen and sledding for hours on end!

Skin:  During the dry, winter months I sleep with a humidifier in the bedroom.  It adds moisture to the air which is great for my skin, hair  (and sinuses) and I sleep better in general.  I use a hot air humidifier, like this vaporizer, because it keeps bacteria at bay. The link takes you to the exact one that I have in each bedroom in our house.  If you choose a cool-air version, it’s just a bit of extra work to keep it clean.  Some homes have a whole-house humidifier. Check your filters to make sure they are clean and don’t forget to turn them on in the winter.  And drink plenty of water!

Vicks 1.5 Gal. Vaporizer

Bundle Up!  I keep all of my cute wraps, hats and scarves in a basket right by the door of my house. That way they are convenient to grab as I am putting on my coat, and I can add just the right accessory to match my coat of choice.   This cute popover from Loft is only $34.99!

Stay warm and pretty! -Meredith

Closet Makeover Services | Meredith Ehler | Image Consultant | Fairfax County, VA

Can you use a closet makeover?  If you answered “Yes!” you are not alone.  I recently received a comment on this very blog from a woman named Jill.  She was inquiring about my closet services and hoped to have me out to her home to organize her closet.  After exchanging a few emails we scheduled an appointment and I met her at her house.  We got right to work.

my closet.

my closet.

Jill has a great sense of style and knows what colors and styles look great on her so we didn’t spend too much time on those topics.  We spent most of our time analyzing the clothes she has and loves, discussing their condition and new ways to wear them.  Some clothing got sent to a “dry clean” pile because I may have detected a spot or stain.  Some got sent to a “charity” pile.  These items were ones that she no longer is enjoying yet they still have life left in them.  That way she can bless someone less fortunate with her still-wearable clothes.

The clothes we were left with were those that she still enjoys wearing and that still look great on her.  We organized them in a logical way in her closet.  I recommend hanging items in “like groups”.  I put her tanks and blouses together in order of sleeve legnth, color, and whether it’s for work or play.  We started on one end with tanks, then short sleeves, then long.  We hung her “work only” clothing in one area.  As some shirts could be work on both occasions, those were hung with her everyday shirts.  The end goal is that when she is getting dressed she can ignore the “work only” clothing and go straight to the everyday clothing.

We stored out of season clothing in a corner of the closet so that the first clothes she sees are those that she will wear most often.  She had a great hanging accessory organizer.  We purged that as well as a shoe bin.

My goal is always to leave my clients with a new happy place…their newly organized closet.  My wish is that each morning their closet greets them like a new best friend waiting to meet them for coffee.  I want getting dressed to be effortless and accessorizing a breeze.

I just heard from Jill and she is enjoying her new closet.  She said she enjoyed having me and may have me back as the season’s change to do the same thing to her winter wardrobe.  Did I mention she is smart too?  -Meredith

Prom Prep | Meredith Ehler | Fashion Stylist | Northern Virginia

It’s PROM TIME!  I am so happy for all of the lucky girls who get to look forward to prom! When I was in high school I loved prom – any excuse to get dressed up and buy a new dress!

Three beautiful girls I had the pleasure of doing hair and makeup for – Sammy, Arie and Kelsey from Potomac Falls High School!

As you are preparing for prom I have a few tips for you.

Dress:  The item upon which all other prom elements revolve!  Once you have your dress you can accessories with shoes, jewelry and the right bag.  Then I suggest taking some time to do trials with your friends for hair and makeup.  Take pictures of each other in your prom dresses with your hair and makeup done.  This way you can see how the dress works with the colors of makeup you have chosen and whether you like your hair up or down depending on the lines of the dress.

Hair:  Depending on how simple or blingy your dress is, you should choose a hair style that flatters the overall look for the evening.  Long and straight with a simple rhinestone barrette, simple curls, or an up-do with tons of interest each add a different feel to your look.  I recommend balancing the hairstyle with the entire ensemble.  Having a crazy hairstyle with a very detailed dress may be a bit much.  Sometimes it’s nice to have one element being sleek while another takes center stage!

Makeup:  Prom is the perfect time to shine!  Don’t be afraid to sparkle whether it’s eye shadow or shimmer on the top of your cheek bones or shoulders.  This is the night to have fun with makeup you would not normally be daring enough to wear.  I recommend trying fake eyelashes too!  ELF.com sells them for just a few dollars.  Practice before the big night because using the eyelash glue can be tricky.  I will post a blog with tips on applying lashes soon!

Friends: Finally – have a safe and fun night.  Start off the night with your girlfriends, and maybe a makeup artist and hair stylist like me!  Take lots of fun pictures and enjoy your night!  I would love to post some of your pix on my blog so message me!  -Meredith

Accessorize with Ease! | Meredith Ehler | Image Consultant | Loudoun County, Virginia

Organized Necklaces.

DETANGLE, PURGE and ORGANIZE!

How is everyone doing?  I hope you are ready for another challenge!  We are organizing our jewelry today!  Let’s dive right in and start detangling!

I love the look of a perfectly coordinated outfit, right down to the rings on your fingers.  But accessorizing can be a hassle, adding extra time to your morning routine trying to find the mate to an earring or realizing that the scarf you wanted to wear is crumpled up in the bottom of your scarf drawer.  If things are out in the open and arranged nicely it’s easy to add accessories and to give you a polished look.

I use belt and tie racks to arrange necklaces and scarves.  They hang items without getting tangled or wrinkled.  And I can see them all at once so I can grab one and go!  I put silver/cool toned necklaces on one side and gold/warm tones on the other which saves me time while I am hunting for just the right pieces.

Jewelry hanging organizers are great for earrings, rings, bracelets, pins and hair accessories.  I color coordinate each side as well so that means I only have to look in one area for what I need.

I recommend you make a special place near your kitchen to place your most worn jewelry, either a corner of a drawer or maybe a cute tray on a counter.  I put ring holders near all the sinks I frequent for hand washing so my rings are not misplaced or washed down the drain. Having ring holders or cute, decorative trays to hold your jewelry makes it easy to find your fave’s and they will never be misplaced.

Remember, purge and get rid of the pieces you don’t use or need anymore.  Donate them to someone who will treasure your treasures!  -Meredith

my closet.

So, if you are ready, I would like to give you your first assignment.

This week, take a few minutes and remove 1-10 items from your closet that you no longer enjoy.  There is no peace or joy when your closet is too full or it contains items that no longer serve you well.  I want you to let go and get rid of 1 to 10 items of your choice.  I suggest you use ask yourself “does this item bring me joy?” (it could be a shirt, a pair of shoes, an old sweater, a necklace you never wear, etc).  If the answer is “no” then I am asking you to let it go.  Consider giving it to a friend, a church or charity that could use the item(s).  It feels amazing to know that the next time you go into your closet it will be less crowded, and that you will have blessed someone in the mean time.

How to Prepare for Your High School Senior Portrait Session | Meredith Ehler | Image Consultant | Loudoun County, Virginia

Congratulations – you are about to have a portrait session with a professional photographer!  Get excited because you are in for a great time!  There is a bit of homework to do beforehand however.  But don’t worry,  it’s fun homework.  You have to become your own personal stylist to ensure that you look amazing in your pictures!

Whether your session is in a studio or outside, you need to prepare yourself and the outfits you will be wearing for the shoot.  As a stylist I want to make sure your personality shines through but doesn’t overwhelm “you” in your pictures.  Choose your hair style, makeup and wardrobe carefully so that your style is your perfect accessory!

Choosing Your Outfits

Most likely you will be photographed in a “drape” for your yearbook picture as well as in a few of your own outfits.   The typical outfits to prepare are a few casual outfits, an outfit that reflects your hobby like a sport or an instrument you play, and a formal outfit like a prom dress.  Your job is to go through your wardrobe, plan out the outfits and accessorize each of them, from jewelry to the shoes and even undergarments they may require.  Solid colors are best because patterns and busy designs can be overwhelming and don’t always photograph well.  You can always bring an outfit you aren’t sure about with you and the photographer will let you know if it will work.  Shoes don’t always show in the shot but assume they will and bring them along just in case.

lay out your outfits

Attention to Details

During your session you will be posing in different positions.  Some poses will show your fingernails and maybe even toenails.  Make sure to have a fresh manicure and pedicure for your shoot.  Even if you do your nails yourself.  Choosing a simple color, even a clear coat or a french manicure will look great in the pictures.  If you choose a deep color or a mutli-colored manicure it may be distracting.  And remember, we want YOU to stand out, not your nails.

Think about the jewelry and watch you wear in the shoot.  I recommend choosing different accessories that fit the “feel” of each outfit.  For example:  remove your sport watch or friendship bracelets for outfits that are dressy like a prom dress or senior drape.  I suggest laying your outfits out on your bed, with clothing, shoes and accessories too.  This way you can see everything for the entire shoot right in front of you.  If anything stands out too much, consider swapping out that item for one with a more subtle look.  The most important thing in your pictures is you!  Your personal style should not overwhelm you in your pictures.

Beauty Prep

Little things can show up in a big way in your photos.  I recommend having your hair and makeup done by me or a professional like me before your shoot.  I finish the session by making  sure my clients have the essentials with them to do touch ups during the shoot as well.  I recommend bringing a lip gloss with some color in it to re-apply as yours wears off, a compact of powder or oil-blot sheets in case you get shiny, and a hair brush to keep your hair from getting messy as you change your outfits.

A week before consider having your eyebrows shaped and make sure your roots don’t need a touch up.

Makeup for High School Seniors | Meredith Ehler | Makeup Artist | Sterling, Virginia

This past week I had the pleasure to do makeup for 2 beautiful rising high school seniors, Marisa and Maddy.   Basically I am their personal stylist – just like stars have before they walk the red carpet

makeup and hair for Maddy.

I have the privilege of working with a few local Fairfax and Loudoun County photographers and their clients.  The clients typically come to me before they have their photo session for makeup, hair styling, and styling of their outfits they will be wearing for the session.  It’s traditional for high school students, both girls and guys, to have a professional photographer do a portrait session just before their senior year.

makeup for Marisa.

Today, the session with Marisa started with styling her wardrobe.  We chose the outfits that will work best in front of a camera.  We chose the accessories that will best highlight each outfit.  Today’s shoot was with Angela Goodhart of Goodhart Photography.  She has amazing backdrops that work with a myriad of colors and styles of clothing, and personalities!

adding accessories to the adorable dresses.

Then we moved onto makeup.  My goal is to have my client go to her photography session feeling beautiful and confident.  I like to prepare each girl for what to expect during the shoot.  The more they know then the quicker they can become comfortable in front of the camera and the more fun they will have!

makeup!

Any occasion for a professional is a perfect occasion for me to style you!  I recently did hair and makeup for a beautiful client who was doing a special photo book for her husband-to-be as a wedding gift.   I am also available to stay with your during the shoot and style each shot to make sure your hair, makeup, and wardrobes look amazing!   Schedule me right after you schedule your shoot with your photographer to ensure I am available for your shoot date.
