katie and me agp 10.12.12.

With Winter passing and Spring around the corner it’s a perfect time to plan a photoshoot. Soon the blooms of the flowers and trees will begin to decorate our landscape. That means it’s a perfect time to book an appointment with your favorite photographer. I am a professional makeup artist in the Washington, D.C. area and Angela Goodhart and I have worked together for 10 years. She and I love to help our clients achieve the perfect headshots and portraits.  Here are some of the tips we share with our clients before their shoot, for both indoor and outdoor shoots.

Michelle Discher on a blanket

When a client books a session with me before their photoshoot it is wonderful for so many reasons. My favorite reason is simply for them to be pampered! Sometimes we are moving so fast that we forget to slow down and take care of ourselves. So many clients tell me that they are so happy they treated themselves to having me style their hair and do their makeup because it was a great way to relax before their shoot. They feel like their pictures look great not only because they had professional hair and makeup, but also because when they finally got in front of the camera all the issues of the day were farther away in their rear-view mirror. They tell me that they were really able to relax and enjoy themselves!

It’s a great idea to take care of some small details too. Believe it or not, there is a chance that your fingernails will show up in the picture. Sometimes a simple pose will incorporate your hand being in the shot. I recommend having a professional manicure done before the shoot. Celebrity photoshoots at the top magazines always have a manicurist on set! If you can’t get a professional manicure then consider taking a few minutes to give yourself a simple manicure, both women and men, and remember to check the nails on your teen boys and girls too. Just take a moment to cut and smooth out rough nails. For women, I recommend a light or clear polish. Dark nails and nail designs are fun but can be distracting in the final picture. And the “perfect nails” today may seem trendy our outdated as you look back at the pictures one day. Keeping it simple is the best bet!

The same guidelines are great for hair and makeup too. I love making women of all ages feel beautiful. But my goal is always that they feel like a more beautiful version of themselves. The makeup I do on my clients is what I call “simple beauty.” I don’t set out to change their look, I want to simply enhance their God-given beauty. I don’t recommend any trendy hair or makeup for a photoshoot. If it’s homecoming or prom that is a different story! But for a headshot or senior portrait session I like simple hair and makeup. I always make sure my client or Angela has lip color, powder and or oil blot sheets, and a hair brush on location so that my clients can touch up at the shoot.

The most important tips for hair are: 1 – Get a fresh trim on your hair, especially if it is long. It will curl much better if the ends of your hair are fresh and it will look so healthy! I promise that cutting off an inch will make you look better – not worse! 2 – Have clean roots and dry hair when you arrive to my studio. And 3 – If you have super curly hair consider getting a blow out before you come to see me. I can style hair for your shoot but if it is super curly, and you want a straight look, it’s best if you arrive with a fresh blow out.

5 Tips for Great Summer Makeup | Meredith Ehler | Makeup Artist | Loudoun County, VA

Summer brings so many wonderful things like lazy days at the beach, canoe rides on the Potomac River, picnics with friends, and in my case, freckles. As great as summer is, nothing is worse than trying to keep your makeup in place a hot and humid day.

Michelle Discher on a blanket

When I lived in the South Carolina I experienced humidity that literally felt like you had walked into a steam room. Living in Loudoun County, Virginia is not much better. Washington, D.C. apparently was build on a swamp…thanks founding fathers! Living in these parts of the country means asking makeup to defy the elements and stay put when it should instead roll right off our face. Let’s not even mention what happens to my hair – not a pretty site!

Here is a link to an article I wrote for Loudoun County’s Times Newspapers. It gives you 5 tips to keep your makeup looking great in the summer heat!

Top 5 Makeup Brush FAQ’s | Meredith Ehler | Makeup Artist | Loudoun County, VA

katie and me agp 10.12.12.

Makeup brushes are the tools of my trade. I bet I have over 200! I have my faves that I use all the time and I have a few I wish I would not have bought. But whether I have spent a few dollars or splurged on a special brush, it is important that I take care of them with proper cleaning. I get asked all the time about how to take care of makeup brushes. Here are answers to the top 5 Makeup Brush Questions I get asked all the time.

brushes in brush belt

1 Why should I clean my makeup brushes?

When you use a dirty makeup brush you may notice that you are no longer getting the look you used to achieve. Each brush is constructed with a specific job in mind. some are to line an eye, some are to contour a cheek. if the brush is so loaded down with product that the shape has changed it won’t be able to do it’s job well. that means that you won’t get the result you are looking for.

Dirty brushes can’t apply product as well. If they are misshapen because they are filled with product, or if they are “wet” because they are laden with old concealer or foundation you won’t get the clean lines or soft edges that the brush is intended to create. Also, wet products like foundation and concealers can grow bacteria causing breakouts.

2 How do I know when it is time to wash my brushes?

If the makeup brush you bought is now unrecognizable, that is a good sign to wash your brush! Clients hire me to help them streamline and improve their daily beauty routine. I have them bring me the contents of their makeup bag. I often see brushes that were once slim and streamlined that are now fluffed up and fanned out like a peacock’s tail. When your blush brush is 3 times it’s original size that means it is so loaded with product that the bristles are now not able to hold their original shape. That means that washing out the product will most likely result in a slim shape again, allowing it to do it’s job well.

3 How should I clean my brushes?

I like to keep things simple and cost effective so while I love a good brush cleaner I like to keep it simple here is my latest brush cleaning routine.

Warm Water and Simple Dish Soap

I use warm water and simple dish soap to clean my brushes. I do not use soap with fragrance or anti-bacterial properties, so my soap it simple yet does the job well. I swish around the brush to remove the product. If stubborn product is still stuck to the brush I add a bit of soap to my hand and gently swish it around again. It’s important to rinse thoroughly but swiftly. brushes should not be immersed in water for long. water can get into the ferrule (the metal part of the brush that connects the bristles to the handle) and cause the bristles to become loose and shed. So i am swift with my rinsing. you can swish the brush around in a cup of warm water or hold each brush under the stream of water from your faucet, which is preferred because less water will make its way to the inside of the brush this way.

4 How often should I clean them?

It depends. If your brush looks “full of product” as I mentioned above then the brush won’t be able to do it’s job. If it’s visibly dirty with foundation or concealer then you risk bacteria growth. Dry products like eye shadow don’t grow bacteria but wet products like cream concealers or foundations will absolutely be prone to growing bacteria. That could lead to your skin breaking out. So those brushes should be cleaned more often, like once a week or twice a month.

5 What are your favorite makeup brushes?

Beauty Tips To Help You Look Hot In The Cold | Meredith Ehler | Makeup Artist | Sterling, VA

In this crazy, sub-zero weather looking good drops to the bottom of my to-do list.  I find myself twisted up in scarves, hats, and gloves, not to mention layers of sweaters and jackets leaving me an over-heated, static-haired mess!  Bundling up is wreaking havoc on my hair, leaving me with either permanent hat-head or hair that is half standing up and the other clinging uncomfortably to my cheeks.  And it’s so cold I find myself wearing my gloves in the grocery store, completely negating the need for a manicure.

Don’t get the winter blues!  Here are a few tips to keep you looking hot in the cold!

Hair:  My hair sure seems to have a mind of it’s own, and wings because it keeps trying to fly away!  Keep hand lotion in your purse to use as a quick-fix conditioner.  I rub a small amount between my hands and comb it through to conquer the fly-aways.

Also consider a leave-in conditioner during the winter months.  If your hair tends to be dry it can be the cause of the fly-away’s.  A little extra moisture should do the trick.

Sephora has this one from Ouidad which is a great line for curly hair.

Ouidad - Moisture Lock™ Leave-In Conditioner

Lips:  Chapped lips can be a real mess.  Once they are chapped it seems as if it takes forever to return them to their smooth state.  To prevent chapped lips drink plenty of water and make sure to condition them to prevent chapping.  I carry around lip balm as well as wear a moisturizing lipstick.  Preventing chapping is much easier than repairing.  But if your lips are chapped you can use this exfoliant from e.l.f.

e.l.f. Lip Exfoliator

The e.l.f. Studio Lip Exfoliator will help you shed the layers of flaking skin.  You can find it online as well as at Target and Walmart.  And at $3, it’s a great buy!  Then make sure you keep them moisturized with your favorite lip balm.  I recommend at night you applying a heavy product like Aquaphor Lip Repair to get a dose of deep hydration and repair your lips while you sleep.

Cheeks:  If you will be out in the elements for a prolonged period of time consider a layer of Aquaphor on your cheeks as well as your lips.  As long as you don’t mind glowing a bit, Aquaphor serves as a barrier during the cold and wind, preventing wind-burnt cheeks. This is a great tip for children who will be making snowmen and sledding for hours on end!

Skin:  During the dry, winter months I sleep with a humidifier in the bedroom.  It adds moisture to the air which is great for my skin, hair  (and sinuses) and I sleep better in general.  I use a hot air humidifier, like this vaporizer, because it keeps bacteria at bay. The link takes you to the exact one that I have in each bedroom in our house.  If you choose a cool-air version, it’s just a bit of extra work to keep it clean.  Some homes have a whole-house humidifier. Check your filters to make sure they are clean and don’t forget to turn them on in the winter.  And drink plenty of water!

Vicks 1.5 Gal. Vaporizer

Bundle Up!  I keep all of my cute wraps, hats and scarves in a basket right by the door of my house. That way they are convenient to grab as I am putting on my coat, and I can add just the right accessory to match my coat of choice.   This cute popover from Loft is only $34.99!

Stay warm and pretty! -Meredith

Check Your Neck – Skincare | Meredith Ehler | Makeup Artist | Loudoun County

Three generations together; my mom, my daughter and me.  This photo reminds me of some of the advice my mom has given me throughout my life.  Lately I have been very grateful for her advice regarding caring for my neck.  Yes, my neck.  Specifically to moisturize my neck.  Since I was a teenager I have always included my neck and décolleté (upper chest area), as part of my routine.  Now that I have been over 29 for a few years, ahem, I am so glad that I did.

She always told me it is important to take care for your skin at as young an age as possible.  We all now know to use face creams and makeup with SPF to prevent sun damage.  But many of us forget our neck, décolleté, and ear lobes.  They all are subject to freckling and sun damage.  Applying sunscreen and facial products with SPF to these areas will slow the aging process keeping you looking younger longer.  There are ways to undo some sun damage, like laser facials, which I will blog about soon.

Another reason to check your neck is to make sure your face and neck are the same color. When you apply your makeup consider applying bronzer to your neck.  Especially as we are starting to be outside more, our faces may get more sun than our neck and décolleté.  Make sure you invest in a bronzer without shimmer to use on these areas.  I recommend a bronzer with no shimmer because using it on these areas is to even out your overall color, not to add shimmer.  Bronzers with shimmer are great but for the purpose of adding sparkle and color when you want to shine!   -Meredith
