It is a blessing to live in Loudoun County Virginia. It’s a beautiful place filled with wonderful communities. I wouldn’t be able to be successful without the people that support me and my business. A special thanks to Karen Graham and Angela Goodhart who have blessed me so much!

Fall Into Holiday Decor | Meredith Ehler | Home Decorator | Sterling, Virginia

Pumpkins on stoops, pumpkin spice latte’s, and pumpkin decor lining the aisles at Michaels.  It’s time.  It’s time to decorate for fall but it’s also time to start planning for your Christmas decor.  Michael’s, AC Moore, Kirklands and all of your supercenters are starting to shock the shelves with holiday decor.  Now is the time to plan and buy.  Here are a few tips to consider for buying holiday decor for any holiday:

IMG_3193

Buy Now – Return Later.  It’s better to buy now and buy a few of each item you may like. you can always return it later if you bought too many.  Sales are happening now, believe it or not!  I just bought 3 gilver (gilver=a color in between gold and silver) deer head ornaments at Hobby Lobby at 40% off!  I wish I would have bought more!  UGH!  I suggest decorating in clusters of 3 or 5 of one thing like pumpkins or candles.  So think about buying more than one of each item so that you can get home and create a well-balanced vignette.

Use Household Items in your Decor.  I have table linens and plates that have fall coloring so I pull them out and incorporate them into my vignettes.  I have a large platter with a turkey in fall colors from my husband’s grandmother.  I use it as the base of my centerpiece. Look around your house and see if you have items in holiday colors. I have a black silk scarf that I use as a table runner under a Halloween centerpiece.

Start Researching Christmas Decor Ideas on Pinterest.  Get your idea juices flowing by perusing Pinterest.  Search on the holiday you are decorating for and get ideas.  This is a great thing to do before you go shopping.  Make your list from the pictures you see then go and shop for the items so you can create it yourself.  Follow me on Pinterest for holiday decor inspiration!  I would LOVE to see your boards as well!

Happy Decorating!

New Year – New Closet! Life Stylist Meredith Ehler Has a Challenge For You! | Meredith Ehler | Fashion & Life Stylist | Northern Virginia

my closet.

Happy New Year!  I love the feeling of a fresh start, where hope springs eternal! Ideas of revamping your life abound!  Yet, the reality of implementing them can be elusive. That got me thinking.  The things I have had success with in my life are those that I gave myself to completely.  I thought that this year I will attempt to serve as your Life Style Coach!  I want to walk you through the steps of organizing and re-designing your life, well, the parts that you would like to make more organized and more stylish that is.  With a coach at your side I believe that you can reach those stylish and organized goals that you have for yourself. And I want you to start with baby-steps.

The best place to start is in your closet.  I want you to have an “ahhhhhh” feeling when you open your closet doors.  Many of you dread each morning because you know you have a closet full of clothes yet you have nothing to wear!  Your closet should be a blessing to you!  I want you to open your closet and be at peace because you are able to easily find a flattering, well fitting outfit that you can accessorize with ease!

my closet.

So, if you are ready, I would like to give you your first assignment.

This week, take a few minutes and remove 1-10 items from your closet that you no longer enjoy.  There is no peace or joy when your closet is too full or it contains items that no longer serve you well.  I want you to let go and get rid of 1 to 10 items of your choice.  I suggest you use ask yourself “does this item bring me joy?” (it could be a shirt, a pair of shoes, an old sweater, a necklace you never wear, etc).  If the answer is “no” then I am asking you to let it go.  Consider giving it to a friend, a church or charity that could use the item(s).  It feels amazing to know that the next time you go into your closet it will be less crowded, and that you will have blessed someone in the mean time.

You have one week!  Please post your results!  I will continue to walk with you and challenge you in different ways this year, all with the goal of a more stylish and organized life!  Remember, baby-steps!  We have an entire year to reach your goals!  A new, more beautifully dressed, less stressed you awaits! -Meredith

DIY Artwork | Meredith Ehler | Home Decorator | Sterling, Virginia

After months of searching for just the right piece of art to put over my mantle, I decided to give up – and paint my own!  Sure, there is plenty of beautiful home decor out there but to find the perfect size, shape, colors, subject, design AND be at the right price point can be frustrating.    I never found anything that spoke to me in my price range.  So I got out the paint and brushes and just started painting.

The good news is that it turned out pretty well.  And if it hadn’t then I would have just painted over it and tried again.  This painting began as a typical print that you see at any home store.  I got this one at Home Goods in the clearance aisle.  It used to be very bright colors: blacks, reds and blues.  I bought it for the shape and size.  It’s 36″ x 36″.

My family room is blues and browns so that is where I started.  I got out a bunch of paint and began painting big broad strokes to cover all of the former design.  I wasn’t sure what I would end up with so I just kept painting, blending different colors randomly.   My faith is very important to me so I ended up painting a cross using all the colors of our decor.  I love the way it turned out and most of all I love that it was cheap and customized just for our house and our style.

Consider turning your trash into treasure.  If you have a painting that is no longer suiting your decor, consider doing the same thing yourself, or finding a daring friend to do it for you.  Check out more amazing trash to treasure ideas at my talented friend’s blog: www.trashtotreasure.com.  Or like her Facebook page Trash To Treasure.  -Meredith
